Unlinked Brand Mentions: Value and How to Turn Them Into Links

- #AI Search

An unlinked brand mention is when a site cites the name of your company, product or domain without placing a link. To Google, that is not a link and does not pass a link's signal. Even so, it can bring readers and helps the brand get remembered. Asking for the link is one of the simplest link building tactics, because the person has already talked about you. If backlinks are a new topic for you, start with what backlinks are.
Quick summary
- An unlinked mention is a citation of the brand name, product, domain or person without an
<a href>pointing to your site. - Google has said it does not treat mentions as links, but that does not make them useless: readers search for the brand, and the mention reinforces recognition.
- For AI search, there is a correlation between mentions and visibility, but no proof that a mention causes a citation.
- Turning a mention into a link works best with a short, grateful, specific email. It is not worth it for every mention.
- Monitoring is a light routine: one alert, one weekly search and a spreadsheet.
How to read this post: technical terms are in the SEO glossary. If you are new to this, read the first three sections and the step-by-step for finding mentions and asking for the link. What is the difference between a mention and a link?
A mention cites the name; a link takes the reader to you. Only the second creates a traceable connection between two sites. Here are the two side by side:
| Unlinked mention | Linked mention | |
|---|---|---|
| What the reader sees | The brand name as plain text | The name, clickable |
| Direct visit | Only if the reader searches | Yes, with one click |
| Shows up in backlink reports | No | Yes |
| Traditional link signal for Google | No | Yes (with the caveats of the rel attribute) |
| Brand value | Yes | Yes |
In plain English: an unlinked mention is someone saying your name in conversation. A link is someone handing over your business card. Both show you exist, but only the second helps the person find you.
What does Google say about unlinked mentions?
That they are not links. In a 2022 Q&A session reported by Search Engine Journal, John Mueller answered that without a link, there is no way for the mention to pass signals like a normal link, and that Google does not count a "half link." He added that this does not mean mentions are bad or should be avoided, because users may search for your site after reading the mention.
What does not exist is an official Google document saying unlinked mentions are a ranking factor. Everything circulating about "implied links" or mention signals comes from patents, informal statements and industry speculation. Treat it as a hypothesis, not a rule.
For SEO professionals: the difference between "Google does not count it as a link" and "Google ignores mentions" matters. The first statement is verifiable in the quoted remark. The second is not documented. Mentions may influence indirect signals (brand searches, clicks, entity recognition), and those effects are hard to isolate.
What about AI search?
There is a correlation between mentions and AI visibility, but the cause is still unknown. Ahrefs analyzed 75,000 brands and, in its study on AI Overviews, found that brand mentions across the web had the strongest correlation (0.664) with AI Overview visibility, against 0.218 for backlinks. In an expanded version from December 2025, covering ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews, mentions stayed between 0.66 and 0.71, and YouTube mentions showed the highest correlation (about 0.737).
Read it with the caveats Ahrefs itself gives: it is correlation, not causation. In the expanded study, the sample was filtered to domains with DR above 40, meaning relatively strong brands, and what is measured is brand presence in AI answers. Also, Ahrefs sells monitoring tools. What can be said is that brands cited widely across the web tend to appear more; whether citing the brand in independent sources causes the appearance, nobody knows.
If the topic is AI visibility, it is worth reading do backlinks help you show up in ChatGPT? and the post on Reddit, YouTube and Quora as citation sources.
How do I find the mentions?
Combine an alert, a manual search and a tool if there is budget. The goal is to find pages that cite you and do not link.
- Create a Google Alert for the brand name. Google Alerts sends emails when new results appear about a topic or mentions of your name.
- Search manually with operators. Example:
"Brand Name" -site:yoursite.com. Use Google's date tool to see only the last month. - Include variations: product name, founder name, misspellings and the domain without
https://(likeyoursite.com). - Open each page and check whether a link exists. Many cite the name and link, and need no action.
- Log it in a spreadsheet: URL, site type, date, whether there is a link, the
relattribute and who the contact is. - Repeat every week, in 20 minutes.
"Brand Name" -site:yoursite.com
"yoursite.com" -inurl:yoursite.com
"Founder Name" "Brand Name" -site:yoursite.com
Paid monitoring and backlink tools find more mentions and let you filter by authority, but the essentials can be done for free. See the free tools to analyze backlinks.
Which mentions are worth converting?
The ones that add readers and credibility, written by real people on useful pages. Not every mention deserves an email.
| Type of mention | Worth asking for the link? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Relevant article or blog post, with an identified author | Yes | Top priority |
| List or ranking that includes your brand | Yes | Ask for the link on the brand's entry |
| Citation of your data or study without credit | Yes | The request is for credit, a very natural one |
| Interview or podcast with a text summary | Yes | Ask for the link in the description |
| Comment, forum, social network | Generally no | Many environments use ugc or nofollow; participate, do not ask |
| Low-quality site with no readers | No | A link there does not help and can hurt |
| Negative mention or criticism | Not for the link | Treat it as customer service |
In plain English: think of whoever cites you as someone who already likes you. Ask that kind of person for the link, politely, and leave the rest aside.
How do I ask for the link without being a nuisance?
Say thanks first, show that the link helps the reader and make the editor's life easy. Someone who has already talked about you has a reason to reply, so the contact tends to be more receptive than a cold first approach. There is no reliable public success rate, and any number you read should be treated as an order of magnitude.
Subject: Thanks for the mention in "[Title of the piece]"
Hi [Name],
I saw you mentioned [Brand] in your piece "[Title]", in the section on [subject]. Thank you, we're glad to be included!
One suggestion, if it makes sense: a reader who wants to learn more about [Brand] could get there faster with a link to [URL], where they'll find [what the page offers].
If you'd like, I can send updated data or a short excerpt for your piece. Either way, thanks for the mention.
Best,
[Name and title]
Hypothetical example: an accounting firm for freelancers finds a finance blog that listed "the most cited accounting firms of the year" with its name and no link. The team writes to the author, says thanks and suggests the link to its services page. If the author edits it, great; if not, the mention stays. In both cases, the relationship got better.
Three rules of conduct: do not offer payment to get the link (paid links need rel="sponsored", as the post on dofollow, nofollow, sponsored and UGC explains), do not follow up more than once and accept a nofollow if that is the site's policy.
For SEO professionals: asking for links from sites that already link to competitors is another front, covered in competitor backlink analysis. And if the mention gets your name or domain wrong, ask for the correction first: a misspelled domain becomes a link to the wrong place.
How does the brand help AI and Google recognize the mentions?
By making clear who you are, in one place. If your name is common, or if brands with similar names exist, mentions may be attributed to the wrong entity. Use a consistent name, a clear "about" page and structured data. The post on Organization, Person and sameAs schema shows how to declare the brand and official profiles. This does not guarantee mentions are attributed correctly, but it reduces ambiguity.
If you want to track whether ChatGPT cites the brand in the questions that matter to your business, the AI Visibility feature in Contentor does that tracking (ChatGPT only). Citation by AI is never guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
Do unlinked mentions help SEO?
Google states that it does not treat an unlinked mention as a link, so it does not pass the classic signal. It may help indirectly, with more brand searches and recognition, but those effects are not documented as a ranking factor. Treat it as a brand gain, not a ranking gain.
Can I ask the people who cited me for a link?
You can, and you should, as long as you do it politely, once and without payment. Say thanks, show which page helps the reader and make the editor's job easy. If they decline or use nofollow, accept it. The relationship is worth more than a single link.
Is Google Alerts enough to monitor mentions?
It is enough to start. It notifies you of new results, but does not catch everything and does not show whether the page has a link. Complement it with a weekly manual search and, if there is budget, a monitoring tool. What matters is having a routine and a record.
Do mentions on social networks and forums count?
They count as brand visibility, but rarely as a useful link for ranking, because many of these environments use nofollow or ugc. Participate with usefulness, without asking for links. For AI, communities like Reddit and YouTube can carry weight, as correlation studies show, without proof of cause.
How long does it take for the link to appear?
It depends on the editor. Some reply in days, others never do. If there is no reply within a week, a single polite reminder is acceptable. After that, move on and do not push. Record the result to learn which types of site respond best.
